Afternoon Tea at the Sugar Junction

March 19, 2011

Today we had the loveliest lunch at a new vintage inspired tea rooms in Manchester’s Northern Quarter, for my friend Rachael’s birthday.

The Sugar Junction is a light and airy cafe, which recently opened in the former Rags To Bitches unit on Tibb Street.

For just £12.50 per person, we had as much tea, finger sandwiches, scones with jam and clotted cream, blueberry and custard tarts, meringues and lemon sponges as we could eat.

They have an extensive tea menu and an impressive collection of vintage china. We drank early grey with slices of fresh lemon, and munched on gorgeously creamy goats cheese and caramelised red onion finger sandwiches with the crusts cut off.

The scones came with sweet berry jam and clotted cream, which was served in an antique glass dispenser, with hooks for the spoons.

The staff were attentive, regularly delivering fresh lemon slices and boiled water to our table without so much as a word, and they even kindly collected up the cakes we were too full to enjoy into gold boxes to take home.

The cafe itself is teeny, with only four tables, so booking is essential, but it makes for a truly civilised day out.

Despite the whole idea being quite girly, it even got the boyfriend seal of approval.

Afterwards, we went vintage shopping. I picked up a little boy’s cardigan, with blue and yellow trimming in a varsity style.
